Chronology of cameras Rollei
The Rolleicord Ia Polizei (factory reference K.3 model 532) was delivered in several batches during 1939. The serial numbers are between 611,000 and 1,042,100, and the camera was manufactured intermingled with the Rolleicord Ia type 2. The combined diagnostic features of the camera are: (1) a cast nameplate, (2) the makers’ name in caps under the model nameplate, (3) a shutter face similar to the early Rolleicord Ia type 1 and Rolleicord I, (4) fitted with the Triotar 3.5, a fast lens used on the Rolleicord II. The viewing hood is the typical Rolleicord Ia, with a direct frame finder and without the lateral lever and angle mirror for reflex viewing at eye level (a Rolleicord II feature).
As it was made under several different contracts between F&H and the German police, variations are possible, as referred to by Prochnow in the Rollei Report 1. Early variants presented the background of the distance scale in black (such as the specimen here described), and later batches in silver, parallel with the other Rolleicord Ia types. The total production was around 500 cameras, and no adverts existed as it was sold directly to the German police.
Due to the lack of information and scarcity of the model, several sources refer to incomplete or erroneous information, such as Ian Parker’s Complete Rollei TLR Collector’s Guide (referring erroneously to serial numbers only between 999,500-999,999, and 4.5 Triotar).
