Chronology of cameras 3M

The cameras whose numbers end in 2 follow the xx1 series cameras. They were manufactured in Hong Kong or Macau by Haking.

    Lens Motor Flash Shutter Misc.

  102 R 5,6/33 Fixfocus No Yes 1/125
3M 102 S 5,6/33 Fixfocus No Yes 1/125
3M 202 R 5,6/33 Fixfocus Winder Yes 1/125
3M 202 MW 5,6/33 Fixfocus Winder Yes 1/125
3M 302 M.EF 4,5/34 Fixfocus Yes Yes 1/100 to 1/250 Reading of DX code
3M 402 R 4,5/34 Autofocus Yes Yes   Reading of DX code
3M 402 M.AF 4,5/34 Autofocus Yes Yes 1/100 to 1/250 Reading of DX code

The model names seem to follow a certain logic. AF stands for Autofocus, EF for Electronic Flash, M for motor, MW for Winder, but what about R and S? It seems that R refers to cameras that are colored red (!)? The mystery of the S remains. As the 102 R and 102 S models seem identical except for their color, S may refer to the Standard version.

Some models bear references to several US patents on their baseplate. All of these patents were filed by W. Haking Enterprises Limited, Hong Kong.

From the same series as the 102 and 202, the 302 has many similarities. However, the body of the camera is longer in order to accommodate a rewind motor in addition. The lens is slightly brighter.

Like the other models in the series, this one also exists in red. In this case, the name is shortened to 302 R.

__________

3M means Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing. It's an American company. It was founded in 1902; its' initial purpose was to mine the mineral for the manufacture of sandpaper which it also made.

In 1925, 3M introduced a masking tape called Scotch to the market. It was not until 1930 that Scotch, as we know it, a transparent adhesive tape, was introduced. Electrical insulating Scotch made its' appearance in 1945. The first Scotch magnetic strips arrived in 1947, Scotchguard waterproofing in 1956 and Scotch-Brite began to scratch in 1958.

3M bought the manufacturer Revere in 1960.

In 1964 3M bought the Italian company Ferrania, a manufacturer of photographic products, because it had European know-how and industrial facilities for the manufacture of film and emulsion deposition which 3M did not have. The existence of the Revere and Ferrania companies in the 3M group explains why we find cameras carrying the logo of the Minnesota miners on both sides of the Atlantic since 1964/5.
