The EOS system (Electro-Optical System) represents a complete departure from previous Canon cameras, as everything changes, especially due to the lack of compatibility with FD lenses.
EOS cameras feature sophisticated electronics and excellent autofocus, made possible by the new range of EF lenses with integrated motors (USM). The coupling between the camera body and the lens is now purely electrical. Gone is the small cam that protruded from the rear of FD lenses.
The overall design is new, although it retains some small reminiscences of the T90, designed by Colani.

The name EOS has been retained to designate the digital SLR cameras of the brand.__________
The EOS 500 marks the beginning of a new era for SLR cameras, one of direct competition with high-end compact cameras. Now, they are just as easy to use, lightweight, and compact. Additionally, they feature interchangeable lenses.
The EOS 500 is significantly lighter and more compact than its predecessor, the EOS 1000. It is lighter than an Epoca or a Prima Zoom F.
All this without compromising on features, as it includes functions that the EOS 1000 did not have. The autofocus measurement area is significantly larger. The operational noise is reduced. Light metering is integrated with the autofocus system, improving performance, including with flash photography.
To reduce weight and bulk, some mechanical parts have been removed. For instance, there is no longer a geared wheel to control the number of perforations during film advance. It has been replaced by an infrared sensor that counts the holes.
Compared to the EOS 1000, a few essential features such as the "SF" mode and the self-timer melody have been removed. Who will complain?
